Dr. Sten Stray-Gundersen, MS, PhD is currently a tenure-track assistant professor in the Exercise Science Department at The University of South Carolina. He earned his MS and PhD in Exercise Physiology from the University of Texas at Austin, where his research focused on the cardiovascular safety profile and vascular responses to blood flow restriction training and intermittent hypoxia. He then went on to do a post-doctoral fellowship at The University of South Carolina's Sports Science Lab under the supervision and mentorship of Dr. Shawn Arent PhD, CSCS*D, FISSN, FACSM, FNAK. Sten recently began his faculty position in January and teaches advanced cardiopulmonary physiology, performs research on a wide-range of performance-related topics including BFR, human resilience, ergogenic aids, vascular physiology, and more. As a practitioner and educator, Sten has worked with high-level Olympic athletes and elite military personnel regarding BFR training and presents on BFR-related content and application throughout the country.
